India Morgan
25th June 2019

The UK Wireless Internet Service Providers Association (UKWISPA) recently held a members’ meeting at the Radisson Blue Hotel, Liverpool. The conference covered not only common challenges, but also featured a wealth of updates and best practices for the industry. In attendance were several industry professionals, including our very own Managing Director Ian Bushrod, who introduced marketing services from UKWISPA, featuring key interviews and customer testimonials.

The day began with introductions and a warm welcome to new members by Hal Ponton of UKWISPA, following by a number of key updates. The first of these updates was from Simon Staddon of Cambium Networks and Daniel Greaves of Pure Broadband who discussed how Cambium’s products are being utilised by the team at Pure Broadband to help improve customer speeds on their existing network, by replacing existing access points with the Cambium ePMP2000 accompanied by an RF elements antenna. This, they reported, is enabling them to increase speeds from 20 Mbps to 30 Mbps in challenging WISP environments.

Next up was an update regarding the next BDUK Scheme presented by Gary Blunt Key highlights included the current success rate of the Gigabit Broadband Voucher scheme, along with an overview of the Rural Gigabit Connectivity Programme, to help improve broadband speeds across the country. It was also discussed that BDUK is actively looking at changing regulations to help enhance fibre implementation.

After a welcome coffee break and a chance to discuss the initial updates from the morning, Tim Genders, Chair of WAPA gave a summary of the wireless industry across South Africa and the challenges faced in implementing broadband to every home in the country. To make broadband more cost effective for South African customers, Tim reported that affordable hardware needs to be made more readily available with the assistance of their government – and current petitions for schemes like UK Better Broadband are underway in the country.

It was then time for our very own Ian Bushrod, MS Distribution Director & UK WISPA Board Member to discuss video case studies, including a piece on how Juice Broadband has improved the lives of local communities by offering affordable and fast broadband speeds compared to the sluggish service they have been stuck with in previous years. Interviews and customer testimonials also served as excellent marketing material for their business.

It was then time to stop for lunch, which was followed with a Spectrum update from Nigel King of UKWISPA, who discussed the Spectrum reuse of 3.5ghz and the status of Ofcom in allowing this. Insights followed from Derren Oliver of CommScope (now under the Arris umbrella) investigated the importance of microwave links and how they are still relevant in a fibre-based world.

Later in the afternoon came another exciting update from James West of Manything Cloud CCTV, regarding a new service that removes the need for a network video recorder in home and small business CCTV networks. With a subscription fee, customers can store and view data recorded from their IP CCTV network via smartphone instead, therefore removing the costly need for ever-increasing storage requirements involved with recording equipment.

To wrap up the successful UKWISPA event, David Burns concluded with a talk about WISPs and 5G; and specifically how the wireless community could claim a relationship with 5G. Action points for the next UKWISPA meetingon the 19th September (location TBC), were also discussed and finally the day concluded with a meet the sponsors and members’ networking session.

The Liverpool conference was another great UKWISPA event, sharing lots of valuable content and updates with members and providing a platform for best practice sharing and broader industry collaboration,” said Ian Bushrod, Managing Director at MS Distribution UK and member of the UKWISPA board.
