Switching to a 100% MikroTik Home Network: A YouTube Series by Cameron Gray

We recently collaborated with tech enthusiast Cameron Gray, who decided it was time to refresh his home network using MikroTik hardware. In a multi-part YouTube series, Cameron documents the process of upgrading his setup - swapping out older equipment, configuring the new MikroTik devices, and fine-tuning his network for better everyday performance.

Whether you're exploring MikroTik for your own home or small office, or just curious about how it works in practice, Cameron’s series offers a straightforward, real-world look at the setup process.

Why MikroTik for Home Networks?

MikroTik is a well-regarded choice for those who want greater control over their network. With its flexible RouterOS and wide feature set, it’s suitable for a range of uses - from basic connectivity to more advanced configurations.

Key capabilities include:

  • Managing bandwidth usage
  • Setting up VLANs for network segmentation
  • Configuring routing, firewall, and VPN options
  • Monitoring network traffic and performance

It’s a practical option for users looking to build a more capable and customisable setup at home.

Video 1: Switching to a 100% MikroTik Home Network – Part 1: RB5009 Router

In this first episode of his new series, Cameron begins the process of migrating his home network to run entirely on MikroTik hardware. He starts by introducing the MikroTik RB5009 router, which forms the backbone of the new setup. Future episodes will cover the switches, access points, and the fully upgraded network in action - along with Cameron’s thoughts on performance and usability.

Video 2: Building My Fully MikroTik Home Network – Part 2: MikroTik CRS Switches

In the second episode, Cameron explores three standout MikroTik switches: the CRS354-48P-4S+2Q+RM, CRS312-4C+8XG-RM, and CRS310-8G+2S+IN. He walks through the hardware, discusses how RouterOS operates on a switch, and installs the units in his rack-offering key insights along the way.

Video 3: MikroTik cAP AX Access Points and CAPsMAN Setup

In the third episode, Cameron sets up three MikroTik cAP AX access points, configuring them using CAPsMAN—MikroTik’s centralised wireless management software, running on his RB5009 router. He covers installation, wireless setup, and performance observations.

Final part of the series coming soon…
