Ubiquiti UniFi Protect 7.3 – Smarter Storage and More Flexible Security Deployments
Ubiquiti's UniFi Protect 7.3 is here, with a fresh set of updates focused on making security deployments more efficient, flexible and easier to manage.
Where recent Protect releases have placed a strong emphasis on AI and investigation tools, 7.3 turns more attention towards the infrastructure behind the system. Smarter storage, remote camera adoption, improved video review, and better sensor management all feature in the latest release.
For anyone running Protect across a growing site or multiple locations, there are some particularly useful additions worth knowing about.
What’s New in UniFi Protect 7.3?
Protect 7.3 brings a broad mix of updates across storage, cameras, monitoring and integrations:
-
Super Encoding for improved storage efficiency
-
More flexible video retention controls
-
Protect Teleport for remote camera adoption
-
Time Machine within Video Walls
-
A redesigned Sensor Manager
-
Deeper Shopify integration
Here is a closer look at what each of these changes means in practice.
Make your Protect storage go further
Recording high-resolution video around the clock can consume storage quickly, particularly as more cameras are added to a deployment.
Protect 7.3 gives users more control over how long footage is kept and at what quality.
Recent recordings can be retained at full quality, while older footage can automatically move to a lower-quality format. This creates a more practical balance between keeping detailed recent footage and maintaining a longer recording history.
For deployments where increasing storage capacity is not always practical, it gives users another way to extend retention without immediately adding more drives.
Super Encoding adds another layer of efficiency
Storage optimisation goes further with the arrival of Super Encoding.
Ubiquiti says the technology can improve storage efficiency by up to 50%, allowing more footage to be retained within the same available capacity.
That could make a noticeable difference on systems with multiple high-resolution cameras, where even relatively small efficiency gains can add up quickly.
Combined with the new retention controls, Protect 7.3 gives users more options to decide how storage is used rather than treating every recording in exactly the same way.
Add remote cameras with Protect Teleport
Protect cameras no longer need to sit on the same local network as the console recording them.
With Protect Teleport, compatible cameras can be deployed at a remote location and connected back to an existing UniFi Cloud Gateway or NVR.
There is no requirement for another UniFi console at the remote site or a traditional site-to-site VPN, making it easier to add cameras in locations where deploying a full Protect system would be unnecessary.
Think smaller branch offices, detached buildings, temporary locations or other remote sites where only a small number of cameras are required.
Provided the location has suitable internet connectivity, the footage can still be brought back into the wider Protect deployment.
Go back in time with Video Walls
Video Walls become more useful in Protect 7.3 with Time Machine now available directly from the Dashboard.
Instead of using the Video Wall purely for live monitoring, users can move back through recorded footage without leaving the view.
That makes it quicker to investigate something spotted on screen and review what happened immediately before or after an event.
For environments such as shops, warehouses, offices or other monitored sites, it removes an extra step from the review process and keeps live and historical footage closer together.
A clearer view of sensor activity
The Sensor Manager has also been redesigned.
New charts, filtering options and customisable columns make it easier to understand what connected sensors are reporting across a Protect system.
Rather than viewing sensor information as a collection of individual device readings, the updated interface gives users a clearer way to spot activity and compare events.
This becomes increasingly useful as more sensors are added to a deployment alongside cameras.
Identification tools get easier to manage
Protect 7.3 also makes changes to how people, number plates and other identified activity are handled within Find Anything.
New views make recognised people and vehicles easier to organise, while drag-and-drop assignment helps simplify identification management.
Detection charts and additional filtering options also make it easier to narrow down activity when reviewing footage.
These are relatively small interface changes compared with features such as Teleport, but they should make regular use of Protect noticeably smoother.
Closer integration with Shopify
Retail deployments get another update too.
UniFi Protect now has a native Shopify platform app, building on Protect's existing Point of Sale capabilities.
By bringing video and transaction information together, retailers can add useful context when reviewing activity around purchases and till events.
For businesses already using Shopify and UniFi Protect, it creates a closer link between day-to-day retail operations and physical security.
What does Protect 7.3 mean for your deployment?
The biggest theme running through Protect 7.3 is efficiency.
Rather than simply adding more detection features, this release looks at how existing Protect systems can do more with the infrastructure already in place.
Smarter retention and Super Encoding help maximise storage. Teleport gives more freedom over where cameras can be installed. Time Machine improves footage review, while the Sensor Manager and Find Anything updates make growing systems easier to navigate.
That makes 7.3 particularly relevant for anyone expanding an existing Protect deployment, adding additional sites or simply looking to get more from their current hardware.
